IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Research from the University of Iowa are drawing connections between poverty and cognitive decline.
People in impoverished communities may be seeing cognitive decline sooner than others. In this case, cognitive decline is referring to memory and functionality issues.
The team, led by Dr. Boeun Kim, took a closer look at people who developed cognitive decline. They would then look into lifestyles -- particularly, the person’s income and access to food.
Boeun says food insecurity and lead to people eating less healthy foods while low income jobs can result in chronic stress: both of those are issues which have been known to speed up cognitive decline.
