MARINETTE, Wis. (WFRV) – A Marinette County man has been found not guilty on all charges connected to a 2024 crash that left two people dead.

According to Wisconsin Circuit Court records, 47-year-old Scott Mathis of Pembine was acquitted by a jury on two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

Mathis had been accused of using his cell phone immediately before a June 2, 2024, crash that killed 73-year-old Mary Kust and 44-year-old Elysia Kust.

Investigators said Mathis was driving south on County Highway W when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of County Highway B, colliding with the Kusts’ vehicle.

Following the jury’s not guilty verdict, the criminal case against Mathis has been officially concluded.
