BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi says he is "deeply grateful" for the support the community has shown for the deputies, including his son, shot at the parish courthouse on Monday.

"I am at a loss for words," Sheriff Stassi said. "Today, I reach out not as the sheriff, but as a parent. I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming love, support, and—most of all—the prayers that have been offered for Deputy Charles Riley and my son, Brett Michael, since the tragic events on Monday night."

Riley was killed as a result of the shooting. Captain Brett Stassi Jr. remains in the ICU at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, the sheriff said.
