NORTHERN MICHIGAN - Did someone really take a bear cub away from its mom and put it in a portable dog cage? That’s what two Michigan DNR conservation officers were asked to investigate recently after getting a tip - apparently from a concerned citizen - on the agency’s “Report All Poaching” RAP hotline.

The complaint centered on an address in the DNR’s District 5 area, which includes a handful of counties in Northern Michigan. The tipster said a bear cub was being held in captivity.

Heading to check it out were Conservation Officer Kevin Bunce and Sgt. Jon Wood, according to a recent DNR enforcement report.

“The COs were able to locate the residence and a nearby portable kennel that was described in the complaint,” officers wrote in the report.
