The 35-year-old Tavares has started his 17th season in the National Hockey League on the cusp of becoming part of a rarefied group.

With 494 goals in his NHL career, Tavares is six short of scoring 500 , a milestone that has been reached by just 48 players in league history.

Approximately 8,000 players have skated in the NHL. The math here is fairly simple: What Tavares is on the verge of accomplishing is astounding and should be celebrated accordingly.

“I’m trying not to get reminded,” Tavares said with a smile during an interview with Postmedia this week.
