I’m counting this as a “ Going Greene ” column because I learned, in W.J. West’s The Quest for Graham Greene , that one of Greene’s own favorite authors and early influences was the author John Buchan , who wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps in 1915, which was adapted as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best early films, The 39 Steps .
