Thousands of people waving Cuban and Palestinian flags and handmade banners gathered outside the U.S. Embassy on Thursday, led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and demand an end to the war in the Middle East.

Wearing the traditional kufiya—the black and white scarf commonly worn in those Arab territories- Díaz-Canel was accompanied by other government officials during the event.

Many young people held signs reading "Free Palestine"; others carried Cuban and Palestinian flags.

"What is happening right now in Palestine is very sad. The number of deaths is heartbreaking," Daniel Alonso, a rally participant, told The Associated Press. "But let them know that they are not alone, that they have the support of the Cuban people," he said.

Since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out, Cuban authorities have called for several demonstrations on the island to support the Palestinian people and promote peace in Gaza.

"We are here to support Palestine because we want peace; we don't want war," said Iraysi Atensio, a participant in the rally.
