PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Students and faculty at Brown University are insisting the school reject a Trump administration memo threatening to withhold federal funding if certain hiring and admissions changes aren't made.

A demonstration was held Thursday on College Hill, where protesters called on Brown President Christina H. Paxson not to sign the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education."

The compact, which was sent to Brown and eight other schools last week, outlines new restrictions on how universities approach admissions, financial aid, tuition, foreign enrollment, and political expression.

Demonstrators held signs reading "DEFEND TRANS STUDENTS," "BROWN, PROTECT YOUR STUDENTS," "SAY NO TO AUTHORITARIANISM" and "OUR FREEDOM IS NOT FOR SALE."
