FOXBORO — All signs pointed towards the Patriots taking a run-heavy approach early this season. Through ineffectiveness in the ground game, however, that has not been the case.
The Patriots rank 19th in the NFL in rushing attempts per game, and they’re 18th in rushing play percentage. They rank 31st in rushing success rate and dead last in rush EPA (expected points added) per play. It doesn’t help that Patriots running backs have already lost four fumbles.
They’re just 27th in rushing yards per game and 28th in yards per rushing attempt. And those last two metrics include quarterback Drake Maye’s 110 rushing yards and 4.1 yards per rushing attempt.
