LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is proposing a new city ordinance aimed at protecting older adults from becoming victims of cryptocurrency fraud.

The measure would require all businesses operating or providing access to cryptocurrency ATMs in Lincoln to post visible warning notices informing consumers of potential fraud risks.

“Cryptocurrency scams may be prevalent, but falling prey to them is preventable,” Mayor Gaylor Baird said. “This proposed ordinance shows how we can work together locally to safeguard seniors from financial fraud and stop scams before they start.”

Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow said the department has tracked 426 cryptocurrency-related fraud cases since 2021, with $11.1 million in total losses. The average age of victims is 56, and 42% are 65
