Police have identified the 54-year-old man who died in “an unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill and charged a 23-year-old suspect in relation to the incident.

Officers responded to an assault near Lorraine Street and Bernard Avenue on Wednesday, where a man was found with life-threatening injuries, said York Regional Police (YRP) in a news release on Thursday.

Amir Shafei of Richmond Hill was pronounced dead at the hospital due to blunt force trauma, said police.

The release identified a 23-year-old suspect from Richmond Hill, who “was arrested without incident” close to the scene.

The suspect has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of breach of probation, said police.
