A fatal “unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill on Wednesday is the latest in a series of alarming violent assaults on strangers across the Greater Toronto Area.

York Regional Police were called at 4:43 p.m. to Lorraine St., near Bernard Ave. – northeast of Yonge St. and Elgin Mills Rd. – for reports of an assault in progress.

Officers arrived on scene to find a man – later identified as 54-year-old Amir Shafei, of Richmond Hill – suffering from serious injuries as the result of what they described as an “unprovoked attack.”

The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was later pronounced dead.

On Wednesday night, cops said a suspect was arrested near the scene.
