WASHINGTON ‒ President Donald Trump said he feels good, both physically and mentally, before he undergoes his second medical exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the past six months.

The 79-year-old Trump described his upcoming visit set for Friday, Oct. 10 as a "semi-annual physical" after he underwent a prior physical in April.

"I think I'm in great shape, but I'll let you know," Trump said on Oct. 9 in the Oval Office in response to a question from a reporter. "I've had no difficulty thus far. Is there wood around here? Knock on wood. No difficulty. Physically, I feel very good. Mentally, I feel very good."

Trump, who will also meet with U.S. military members at Walter Reed, said he likes to receive a checkup "when I'm around" and "always early." He added: "Always be early. It's a lesson for a lot of people."

Trump's most recent physical at Walter Reed was on April 11. White House physician U.S. Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, in a report released after the exam, said the president is in excellent health and his history of high cholesterol is "well controlled."

Trump boasted on Oct. 9 that he also received a "perfect score" on a cognitive exam during the checkup. "That made me feel good," the president said.

Trump's first checkup since chronic venous insufficiency diagnosis

Three months after taking his April physical, Trump in July was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency that has resulted in visible swelling in his lower legs near his ankles. The condition occurs when veins in the legs have trouble sending blood back to the heart. It is common among people in their 70s. At 79, Trump is the second oldest person to serve as president of the United States and the oldest to begin a term as president.

Barbabella described chronic venous insufficiency as "benign and common" in a memo on the president's health dated July 17.

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 150,000 new patients are diagnosed with the condition each year. An estimated 10% to 35% of adults have chronic venous insufficiency in the United States.

Trump has also experienced bruising on his right hand, which Barbabella in his report said is "consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking" and his use of aspirin as a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen. He said Trump "remains in excellent health."
