CATAHOULA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - The Catahoula Correctional Center is investigating an inmate’s possible contraband-related death.

The Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office said inmates from Morehouse Parish were transferred to the CCC, where one inmate collapsed moments after taking a single puff from a cigarette.

Security and a lieutenant performed CPR, but the inmate ultimately died.

CPSO said video footage suggests the cigarette could have been brought in by one of the transferred inmates from Morehouse via a body cavity. CPSO added that several inmates reportedly smoked the same cigarette before the inmate who died.

The cause of the inmate’s death is not yet known, but the Catahoula Parish coroner ordered a full autopsy.
