SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - It was a special day for students at Our Lady of Hungary grade school, celebrating the ‘Extra Yard for Teachers’ initiative.

It’s the eleventh year of the program which recognizes outstanding teaching and leadership from teachers at catholic schools.

This year’s winner is Yardira Martinez-Alonzo, a first-grade teacher at Our Lady of Hungary.

She was presented with a $1,000 check from the University of Notre Dame in collaboration with the College Football Playoff Foundation.

This is the tenth year of the initiative.
