A Chicago federal judge issued a temporary restraining order Thursday in a lawsuit filed by representatives of local journalists, protesters, and religious leaders, requiring federal agents to follow specific rules in their encounters with news media as well as private citizens who are protesting immigration enforcement in the Chicago area.

U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis ordered that all uniformed federal agents - from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security and more - must “prominently” display identification – such as badge numbers – on their uniforms or helmets, including when they are wearing riot gear. Those agents have often been seen wearing masks, driving in unmarked vehicles, and not displaying IDs.
