The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the suicide of Dalit IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, directing the Chandigarh administration to submit an action taken report within seven days.

In a notice issued today, the Commission asked the Chief Secretary of Chandigarh and the DGP of Chandigarh Police to detail the steps taken in the case, including the names of all accused, FIR number, date and sections, arrests made, and any compensation given to the victim’s family.

Citing its powers under Article 338 of the Constitution, the NCSC said it would “investigate/inquire into the matter” and warned that failure to respond could lead to summons being issued.
