CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — After speculation earlier in the week, the University of North Carolina announced Thursday that one of its assistant coaches has been suspended for violating NCAA rules related to extra benefits.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that Armond Hawkins, who coaches defensive backs for the Tar Heels, was in hot water for allegedly giving extra benefits to the family of one of the team's players.

This all comes as speculation swirls about head coach Bill Belichick's future. Some outlets reported that Belichick and UNC were exploring options to part ways, but a brief statement released Wednesday night stated that Belichick is committed to being the team's coach, while the Department of Athletics reaffirmed its support for him.
