Montreal’s BIXI bike-sharing service was inducted into TIME magazine’s Best Inventions Hall of Fame on Thursday.
Over the years, TIME has set out to determine the best inventions of the year in consumer technology, medical science, and basic industry.
Thursday, TIME highlighted the most iconic inventions over the past 25 years, and Montreal’s BIXI bike-sharing made the list as it “revolutionized the trend” of bike-sharing, according to TIME.
“When lots of people use a communal resource—like, say, a cheap public bicycle-rental program—they tend to abuse it. So when the city of Montreal built its Public Bike System, nicknamed BIXI, the designers packed in all the technology they could find, in a desperate attempt to out-engineer human iniquity,” said TIME.
BIXI was also noted to pave the
