DANBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - The Connecticut Department of Transportation has unveiled a new proposal to tackle traffic congestion on one of the state’s most heavily traveled highway corridors.
The DOT plans to add a “flex lane” to I-84 through Danbury.
This new lane is designed to ease congestion on the notoriously busy stretch of highway. It would utilize special electronic signs to inform drivers when the additional lane is open for use.
Officials will be able to activate the lane during peak travel times or when accidents create bottlenecks.
State officials say it will be quicker and cheaper to add a flex lane rather than widen the entire highway corridor.
Construction is expected to begin in 2028.
