WEST DES MOINES, Iowa —

Gov. Kim Reynolds has set Dec. 30 as the date for a special election in Iowa's state Senate District 16 to fill the seat of late Democratic Sen. Claire Celsi.

Celsi died earlier this week following health complications. She was 59 years old.

Celsi served in the Iowa Senate since 2019. She was initially elected to serve the state's 21st District, but after the 2023 district realignment, she then represented the 16th District , which covers parts of Clive, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights.
