Former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican candidate for New Jerse govenror, said he intends to sue his opponent, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic candidate, for defamation in relation to statements she made in the second gubernatorial debate.
Ciattarelli announced his plans to sue Oct. 9, after both candidates were asked about bringing jobs to New Jersey on a debate stage in New Brunswick the previous evening. In her response, Sherrill included an attack on Ciattarelli and his dealings as a medical publishing executive.
That line of questioning precipitated media attention. In an Oct. 9 USA TODAY Network Editorial Board meeting, Sherrill defended her questioning of CIattarelli's background, calling it "not a leap."
