There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the southern Philippines today but areas closer to the epicenter were under a tsunami warning, officials said.
“Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” said a Pacific Tsunami Warning Center alert.
The strong earthquake struck at about 3:44 p.m. in Hawaii off Manay town in the Mindanao region at a depth of about 6 miles, officials said.
Officials with the Phivolcs agency warned of damage and aftershocks and urged people living in coastal towns in the central and southern Philippines to immediately evacuate to higher ground or move inland.
PTWC officials said waves of 3 to nearly 10 feet above tide level were possible in the Philippin
