GREENWOOD, S.C. — Family and friends gathered to remember Jaliyah Butler, the young woman who lost her life in the shooting at South Carolina State University. A balloon release was held in her honor.

“Long live Jaliyah,” said her older sister, Victoria Boyd, as dozens of balloons were released into the air.

Family and friends stood together Thursday night celebrating her life.

Nineteen-year-old Jaliyah Butler was killed during homecoming weekend at South Carolina State University. Her family described her as someone who loved to laugh and never hesitated to help others.

“Funny, goofy, and loving. She would give anybody her last,” said her older sister, Cassidy Jones.
