Thousands of people across Connecticut rely on food stamps to get their groceries, but what happens if their benefits get stolen?

The state said it’s a consistent problem and it happened to a woman in Jewett City.

“I got some meat. Some hot dogs. Some TV dinners,” Lora Burgess, of Jewett City, said.

Having enough food is a necessity for Burgess who lives by herself in her apartment. But this month, her pantry wasn’t as stocked.

“I usually fill up the bottom. There’s more on the top usually,” she said.

She noticed something was off when she tried to buy groceries last month.

“I put the card in, swiped it, and it came out denied,” Burgess said.
