MACON, Ga. — After eight years of unanswered questions, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in a 2017 rape case.

66-year-old Robert Carter stood before a judge after he was arrested on Monday, charged with rape in a case Jack Côté says was cold for eight years.

Côté is an investigator with the Bibb Sheriff's Office Cold Case Unit. His team was able to link Carter to the crime because of a previous rape conviction from 1989. He says DNA from that case matched DNA collected in 2017 through the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS.

"The DNA was collected through the rape kit when when the victim called in. So the rape kit was performed and that was entered into the crime lab and the DNA markers from that matched the DNA markers from his 1989 conviction," Côté said.
