TYLER, Texas (KETK) - East Texas ranchers gave insight into the local cattle industry recently after a New World Screwworm was found closer to the southern border.

It's been a cattle season like no other with East Texas Livestock Auction co-owner Case Craycraft saying these are the highest prices seen in 50 years.

"The last two years we had bad droughts, a lot of cows are sold," Craycraft said. "When cattle are sold, then we don't have a calf coming from that cow the next year. So yeah, the cow herds are at their lowest point in 70 years."

While ranchers work to make a profit in this industry, they are also keeping an eye on a growing threat with new cases of New World Screwworm being found closer and closer to the southern border.
