INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WANE) A new license plate design that's only been available to Indiana motorists for two months is proving to be extremely popular. Similar blackout plates have proven popular in other states as well.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) made the Blackout design available on August 8. On Thursday, the BMW announced that more than 40,000 of the new plates have been purchased so far. Those sales have generated more than $1.3 million in revenue.

Of the $45 fee associated with the plate, $34 from each sale goes directly to the BMV and will be used to modernize its digital tools, expand self-service options and streamline transactions across the agency. Standard registration fees still apply.
