Sweeping changes to SNAP are coming sooner than anticipated following the signing of a tax bill in July.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a memo on Oct. 3 stating that all states must begin implementing the new work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents by Nov. 1. Some counties in Oregon have already begun compliance, with some oregonians seeing their monthly benefit cut.

The Republican-led One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) was passed earlier this year. It’s a sweeping tax bill that offered cuts to Medicaid funding and tax breaks for businesses.

For individuals, it changed SNAP benefits in a few ways. The upper age limit for adults without dependents who were eligible to receive SNAP benefits increased from 54 to 64.
