GREENWOOD, S.C. (WIS) - In a home once filled with happy memories, Jaliyah Butler’s family now walks past her empty bedroom each day as they plan her funeral, clinging to each other through unimaginable grief.

Butler, 19, was killed Saturday after a shooting during homecoming festivities at South Carolina State University.

Her grandmother, Helen Williams, believes Butler died doing what she was known for: protecting others.

“Jaliyah, she was a sweet, quiet young lady, she didn’t talk much, she just stayed back in the cut,” Williams said. “If you talked to her, she would talk to you, or she would just smile at you. She was a giving young lady, she didn’t mind helping nobody.”
