BLUFFTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A new four-year, $3.8 million grant awarded to a Palmetto State university will help address the state’s ongoing nursing shortage.

The University of South Carolina - Beaufort received the grant, and one of its main focuses will be on rural and underserved areas.

“This grant is going to be able to help us invest in our young people and be able to guide them and have more of them be able to graduate, kind of give them a lift up,” USCB Provost Dr. Kim Dudas said.

A report from StaffDNA stated there is a 28% shortage of nurses in the Palmetto State.

“South Carolina has one of the greatest nursing shortages in the country,” U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace said. “Fourteen counties in the state, across the entire state, they don’t have a single OBGYN doctor.”
