OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - In an open letter to two Douglas County commissioners , Sheriff Aaron Hanson proposed using the county jail to house Homeland Security detainees, keeping them closer to home — and offsetting property taxes.

In the open letter directed to Douglas County Board Chairman Roger Garcia and Vice Chairman Mike Friend , Hanson says creating such a contract with ICE could bring in $5.5 million to $6.5 million per 100 beds in county revenue that could be used to fill Douglas County Sheriff’s Office budget gaps, ease property tax burdens, and get reinvested back into the immigrant community.
