The Supreme Court on Friday permitted the use of green crackers for two days during Diwali in Delhi-NCR. Chief Justice of India B R Gavai said the relaxation would apply “for the time being.”

This order came after the Delhi government moved the top court to allow bursting of “green crackers” on Diwali, with chief minister Rekha Gupta calling the Hindu festival “the most significant” in Indian culture.

Due to rising levels of pollution every year around this time, there is a ban on the storage and sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR. Bursting of traditional firecrackers add to the smog, caused widely due to stubble burning and vehicles.
