Air shows in Jasper County began with balloon flights and bold parachutists during county fairs and at Lakeside Park at the turn of the 20th century.
With the advent of powered aviation, daring pilots entertained spectators. Prior to World War II, private pilots gave aerial exhibitions. But after the war, active-duty pilots presented the newest planes in the nation’s stable as well as displayed feats of endurance. The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels demonstration squadron made its Joplin debut in 1949 and continued to be air show favorites. ×
