UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Officials gathered for a fitting tribute to legendary grocer Saul Zabar, who died on Tuesday at the age of 97 .

On Friday, MTA leaders revealed they will hang a poster in his memory inside the 79th Street subway station to honor his legacy and contributions to the neighborhood.

"To his family and to everybody who cherishes this very special institution, we say may his memory be a blessing and we thank you all for sharing him with us all these years and giving so much to the west side and to New York," said MTA CEO and Chair Janno Lieber.

Zabar ran his family's namesake grocery on Broadway for most of its 90-year history.

The store grew into a cultural landmark known for its smoked fish, roasted coffee and collections of cheese and bread.
