BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - 74 Korean and Vietnam veterans from across Maine are traveling from Bangor to Washington, DC on Honor Flight Maine’s fourth trip this year.

Once in our nation’s capital, they’ll visit the war memorials that were built in their honor.

“I talked to a veteran a month ago who went on his first Honor Flight a few years ago, and he said, ‘Matthew, my nightmares aren’t as bad.’ So, we are honoring veterans,” said Matthew Mank, chairman of the board of directors for Honor Flight Maine. “We’re helping them have some healing to give them the ‘Welcome Home’ that the Vietnam Veterans didn’t get when they served.”

Sandra Thornton of Augusta served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

She’s traveling alongside her daughter, Penny, who made the trip up from Georgia.
