Toronto councillors didn’t need to worry about a ticket – their hours-long debate moved far too slowly to set off any speed camera.

On Wednesday, at City Council’s first meeting since the summer break, councillors merged five separate items on the agenda, all about Toronto’s automated speed enforcement system, for an oversized debate. Council approved plans for larger signs and a one-week grace period between tickets – and simultaneously pushed the provincial government to justify its plans, knowing speed cameras are about to be legislated out of Toronto.

Premier Doug Ford has pledged to shelve the system across Ontario, saying speed cameras have been abused by cities as a “cash grab.”
