ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A University of Michigan survey shows Americans are still worried about the economy, with confidence levels holding steady in October but remaining well below last year’s numbers.

The Consumer Sentiment Index stayed around 55, showing little change from September. Researchers said people who own significant stock investments reported feeling more optimistic about the economy than those who do not.

Earlier this year, following President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcement, the survey showed a brief moment when confidence between those groups aligned.

For now, most Americans say they remain uneasy about their personal finances as market volatility continues.
