CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office clarified the reason why they released a man accused of killing another man in Maryland earlier this week.

The sheriff’s office said on Friday, Oct. 10, that they released 55-year-old Charles Boatwright on Wednesday because, legally, they can only hold a suspect in jail for 90 days before a Governor’s Warrant is issued.

A Governor’s Warrant is a legal document issued by a governor to authorize the arrest and return of another person accused of a crime in another state.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said that they arrested Boatwright on July 16, and he was charged as a fugitive from Maryland.
