The chief deputy of the Walker County Sheriff's Office is facing a charge during a probe into the department.

Ralph Williams, chief deputy at the sheriff's office, has been charged with one count of providing false or misleading information to the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.

This comes months after Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith was arrested and charged with six counts for assigning unqualified individuals to positions where they wore uniforms, carried weapons, carried badges and used fully-equipped patrol vehicles.

The indictment alleges Williams aided and abetted Smith in appointing an uncertified deputy, then told the commission that the deputy was terminated in November 2024 while he continued
