CENTRAL IOWA [KWWL] — Coffee businesses across the nation, including in Iowa, are feeling the effects of the ongoing global trade war following President Trump's tariffs.

The average price for a pound of ground roast coffee has risen to $9, marking an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous year.

Smokey Row, a company with 14 locations in central Iowa, relies on foreign imports and is now raising prices.

"It's to the point where even some of our coffee that we're putting out the door, the cost is starting to bump right up against who we're trying to sell it for. So that's just not sustainable as a business model," the owners said.

The U.S. is the leading importer of coffee, while Brazil holds the top spot as the largest exporter.
