My grandfather on my father’s side, Franz Waldemar, sported quite a well-turned ’stache. I am a grandmother and remember hearing that his wife used to say, “A man without a mustache is like a soup without salt.”

Michael Andor Brodeur wrote an ironic, funny and often informative column, “We’ve hit ‘peak mustache,’”in the Sept. 22 Style section. Who had heard of Movember, a fundraiser for men’s health in which thousands of men spend November growing “brusque masculine bristle”?
