The Phoenix Mercury has its back against the wall heading into Friday night's Game 4 of the 2025 WNBA Finals against the Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces, who won league championships in 2022 and 2023, jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Mercury in the finals series. Phoenix lost by double digits in Game 2 but suffered heartbreaking losses in Games 1 and 3, losing them by three points and two points, respectively.

Now, its season is on the line Friday night as it looks to keep its hope of winning the franchise's first championship since 2014 and fourth overall alive. The Mercury is also hoping to avoid joining a somewhat exclusive club.

Since the WNBA's birth in 1999, only 10 finals series have ended in sweeps — disregarding the inaugural season, which was a one-game championship. The most recent sweep came in 2020,

Three of those sweeps came during the best-of-three format in the WNBA's early years, while the rest came during the best-of-five era. This year's WNBA Finals are the first in league history to feature a best-of-seven series.

The Aces are looking to capture their third WNBA title in four seasons on Friday night, while the Mercury look to avoid becoming the 11th team to be goose-egged in a finals series.
