Olivia Benson’s squad has undergone an unusual amount of reconfiguring in just the first few episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ( SVU ) season 27. Detective Silva (Juliana Aidén Martinez) unceremoniously left between seasons without much explanation. Benson’s boss Chief McGrath - who was overtly antagonist - stepped down in season 25, and his role has been newly replaced this season.

The SVU season 27 premiere introduced new Chief of Detectives Kathryn Tynan (Noma Dumezweni), who seems effusively complimentary, yet Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) warns Benson (Mariska Hargitay) that Tynan is very hands on. By the end of the premiere, Tynan forces Benson to take a new detective, Jake Griffin (Corey Cott), under the guise of helping fill out the squad.
