COLUMBIA, S.C. —

The longest-serving death row inmate in South Carolina died Monday at the age of 77.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed on Friday that Fred Singleton, who had been on death row since September 1983, died of natural causes.

Singleton was sentenced to death for the 1982 rape and killing of a 73-year-old woman in Newberry County.

Most recently, Singleton was incarcerated at the Broad River facility in Columbia. He has been incarcerated in Broad River since 2019 and was moved to the correctional institution's secure facility in 2021. Singleton was on death row for 42 years.
