KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — National Parks generate billions of dollars each year for the communities surrounding them. In East Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park generated almost $3 billion last year.
With the government shutdown on day 10, some states across the country are working to keep those parks open. That funding is temporary and places a strain on economies that rely on money generated by visitors.
Cocke County is one of those communities that benefits from tourism to the parks. Mayor Rob Mathis said it's not only important for the economy but for locals as well.
"Our local citizens have roots in those mountains. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the home place for many of our residents, including my family," he said.
That's why Sevier County signed an addendum
