PORTSMOUTH, N.H. —

A new community food center is open in Portsmouth.

The nonprofit group Gather opened the center on Heritage Avenue on Friday.

Gather said it will help provide healthy food to people experiencing hunger across the region.

Gather serves families from more than 100 cities and towns in New Hampshire and Maine.

Organizers have been planning for the food center for years.

“This new space creates the foundation for Gather to expand its efforts to address food insecurity in our community.
