NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo addressed his past comments about Rikers Island and discussed plans for the jail, if elected mayor, during an exclusive interview on PIX on Politics.

Earlier this week, Cuomo said he wants to save the jail complex, which is required by city law to shut down and be replaced by smaller borough-based prisons.

Cuomo told PIX on Politics host Dan Mannarino on Friday that the jail complex has to close, clarifying, "Rikers is the building, not the land. We need to knock down the old buildings, which are decrepit."

Cuomo reiterated, "Rikers meaning the building; there's nothing wrong with the land that is Rikers Island. It's the buildings themselves, which are out of date. There are better designs for jails."
