AUSTIN, Texas — A new historic landmark has been designated in Austin.

Austin’s City Council voted this week to grant historic status to the Whitehall Cooperative building. The property, located in the West Campus area, has provided affordable student housing since 1959.

The Whitehall Cooperative was originally established as a women’s residence. When Black students were first admitted to the University of Texas in 1956, Whitehall became one of only two university cooperatives to integrate.

According to Preservation Austin, the designation will help ensure the co-op continues its mission of offering affordable housing.
