It’s not how Andrew MacNiel envisioned his first Ontario Hockey League goal.
The Kitchener Rangers defenceman was just trying to clear his zone while short-handed when he fired the puck down the ice from his own faceoff dot at the GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night.
But, somehow, the biscuit beat Greyhounds goalie Landon Miller between the legs late in the second period.
MacNiel, his teammates, and even the Soo players looked on in disbelief.
“It’s definitely not how I drew it up in my head,” he said. “I just saw people skating toward me. I had no clue that it went in to be honest. It’s probably not the most ideal first goal but it’s good to be lucky. I’ll take it.”
